Scott
Scott was having trouble processing what Kelly had just told him. âYouâre pregnant?â
No. This had to be a joke. Some twisted prank. She couldnât be pregnant. How could that even be possible?
âIâm pregnant,â she repeated quietly, with more tears.
Like a whodunnit movie, rewinding then replaying so that the audience could spot all the clues that theyâd missed, Scottâs mind connected all the signs that heâd failed to recognise. The tears. The changes in her mood. Heâd even put some of it down to her fear of the whole empty nest thing. He was a clown. An actual fricking clown.
âBut⦠how? All these years? How? How can that be? I thought we couldnât? Why now?â He was aware that he was just throwing out words, but his brain was refusing to form coherent thoughts.
Kelly was chewing on her bottom lip. âI donât know why. I canât explain it. I just⦠I just am.â
âSince when?â His brain was like a car engine on a frozen morning, continually trying to restart, and only working a little more each time. How could it be? Theyâd made love maybe once this year, a couple of months agoâ¦
âA couple of months.â
Shit.
For years after theyâd had Carny theyâd hoped for another child, but it hadnât happened. Kelly had been told that the op sheâd had to remove her ruptured cyst had probably made it impossible. After that, theyâd stopped thinking about it. Even when they were still having regular sex, theyâd never discussed contraception, never given it a second thought. Fuck, how could he have been so stupid? How?
âScott, youâre scaring me. You look like youâre about to pass out.â
âIâm sorry, Kelly. I donât know what to say.â
Thatâs what came out of his mouth. Inside his head, all he could hear was fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
This couldnât be happening. Not now. Not when he had made the decision to change his life, to go and find happiness on his own terms. This was karma. Deep down inside, heâd known that it was a dick move. Now karma was paying him back.
The sound of a sob made it through the blasts of the bombs exploding his future and he opened his eyes to see Kelly was crying again.
He leaned over and put his hand on hers. âHey, hey, hey, itâs okay. Iâm sorry, Iâm being a dick. Itâs just â Christ, I canât believe it. When did you find out?â
She sniffed and then wiped her tears away with the palm of her hand. âThis morning. I was sick.â Crap, she was crying again. âAnd⦠and⦠Sabrina saw me.â She couldnât get the words out through the sobs.
He budged over and put his arms around her and let her cry, big, heaving, choking shudders of distress. His heart couldnât take it. Their relationship had drifted into something more like friendship years ago, but he still loved her, still cared for her. Theyâd been together more than half of their lives â he wasnât going to let her suffer on her own.
