Scott

Scott was having trouble processing what Kelly had just told him. ‘You’re pregnant?’

No. This had to be a joke. Some twisted prank. She couldn’t be pregnant. How could that even be possible?

‘I’m pregnant,’ she repeated quietly, with more tears.

Like a whodunnit movie, rewinding then replaying so that the audience could spot all the clues that they’d missed, Scott’s mind connected all the signs that he’d failed to recognise. The tears. The changes in her mood. He’d even put some of it down to her fear of the whole empty nest thing. He was a clown. An actual fricking clown.

‘But… how? All these years? How? How can that be? I thought we couldn’t? Why now?’ He was aware that he was just throwing out words, but his brain was refusing to form coherent thoughts.

Kelly was chewing on her bottom lip. ‘I don’t know why. I can’t explain it. I just… I just am.’

‘Since when?’ His brain was like a car engine on a frozen morning, continually trying to restart, and only working a little more each time. How could it be? They’d made love maybe once this year, a couple of months ago…

‘A couple of months.’

Shit.

For years after they’d had Carny they’d hoped for another child, but it hadn’t happened. Kelly had been told that the op she’d had to remove her ruptured cyst had probably made it impossible. After that, they’d stopped thinking about it. Even when they were still having regular sex, they’d never discussed contraception, never given it a second thought. Fuck, how could he have been so stupid? How?

‘Scott, you’re scaring me. You look like you’re about to pass out.’

‘I’m sorry, Kelly. I don’t know what to say.’

That’s what came out of his mouth. Inside his head, all he could hear was fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

This couldn’t be happening. Not now. Not when he had made the decision to change his life, to go and find happiness on his own terms. This was karma. Deep down inside, he’d known that it was a dick move. Now karma was paying him back.

The sound of a sob made it through the blasts of the bombs exploding his future and he opened his eyes to see Kelly was crying again.

He leaned over and put his hand on hers. ‘Hey, hey, hey, it’s okay. I’m sorry, I’m being a dick. It’s just – Christ, I can’t believe it. When did you find out?’

She sniffed and then wiped her tears away with the palm of her hand. ‘This morning. I was sick.’ Crap, she was crying again. ‘And… and… Sabrina saw me.’ She couldn’t get the words out through the sobs.

He budged over and put his arms around her and let her cry, big, heaving, choking shudders of distress. His heart couldn’t take it. Their relationship had drifted into something more like friendship years ago, but he still loved her, still cared for her. They’d been together more than half of their lives – he wasn’t going to let her suffer on her own.
